What Is Daggerheart RPG?

Daggerheart is a fantasy tabletop RPG published by Darrington Press — the publishing company founded by the cast of Critical Role. Designed by Spenser Starke and Rowan Hall with input from the Critical Role team, Daggerheart launched in 2024 and quickly became one of the most-played new TTRPG systems.

Unlike D&D, which uses a single d20 for action resolution, Daggerheart uses a dual d12 system: one Hope die and one Fear die. The outcome depends not just on the total, but on which die is higher — giving both the player and the Game Master (called the GM) a shared stake in every roll. High Hope means the player narrates success; high Fear means the GM gains resources to raise the stakes.

Daggerheart characters are built around nine classes (each tied to two of nine domains), 18 ancestries, and a community system that separates species from cultural identity. The result is a flexible, narrative-forward system that rewards creative play over pure optimization.

Why Use AI for Daggerheart Character Creation?

Daggerheart character creation has more moving parts than it first appears. Between choosing your ancestry, community, class, two domains, subclass, and starting equipment — while keeping the Hope & Fear narrative logic in mind — a first character can take an entire session to build properly.

MythScribe AI handles the mechanical generation automatically and writes a backstory that reflects Daggerheart's tone: collaborative, narrative-driven, and grounded in your character's community and ancestry. You get a ready-to-play character in seconds, with the option to regenerate any field you want to change.

How Daggerheart Works

A quick primer on the core mechanics that make Daggerheart unique among tabletop RPGs.

Hope & Fear Dice

Every action roll uses two d12s: one Hope die and one Fear die. When Hope is higher, the player succeeds with narrative control. When Fear is higher, the GM gains Fear points to fuel enemy abilities and raise the stakes. Doubles trigger critical successes with Hope.

Six Traits

Characters are defined by six traits: Agility (dodging, speed), Strength (raw power), Finesse (precision, craft), Instinct (awareness, intuition), Presence (charisma, will), and Knowledge (lore, intellect). Trait modifiers are added to your Hope & Fear roll.

Domains

Nine domains shape every class: Arcana, Blade, Bone, Codex, Grace, Midnight, Sage, Splendor, and Valor. Each class draws from two domains, and as you level up you select domain cards that grant new spells, techniques, and passive abilities.

Damage Thresholds

Instead of subtracting damage from HP point-by-point, Daggerheart uses damage thresholds. Incoming damage is compared to your minor, major, and severe thresholds to determine how many Hit Points you lose. This keeps combat fast and dramatic.

Communities

Communities are Daggerheart's equivalent of a background. They represent the cultural group your character was raised in and grant a community feature plus narrative hooks. Communities are separate from ancestries, so a Dwarf raised among Faeries or a Human from a Goblin warren are both valid and encouraged.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is Daggerheart?

Daggerheart is a fantasy tabletop RPG created by Darrington Press (the publishing arm of Critical Role). It uses a unique Hope & Fear dual d12 mechanic that gives both players and the Game Master shared narrative control. When you roll Hope, you succeed with player-driven narrative; when you roll Fear, the GM gains resources to raise the stakes.

How do Daggerheart characters work?

A Daggerheart character is built from four pillars: an ancestry (species), a community (cultural background), a class with two domains, and a subclass chosen at character creation. Characters have six traits (Agility, Strength, Finesse, Instinct, Presence, Knowledge), Hit Points, evasion, and damage thresholds (minor, major, severe) that determine how they absorb harm.

What are the 9 Daggerheart classes?

The nine classes are Bard (Grace & Codex), Druid (Sage & Arcana), Guardian (Valor & Blade), Ranger (Sage & Blade), Rogue (Midnight & Grace), Seraph (Splendor & Valor), Sorcerer (Arcana & Midnight), Warrior (Blade & Valor), and Wizard (Codex & Arcana). Each class draws abilities from its two domains.

What are Daggerheart domains?

Domains are the nine thematic pillars of Daggerheart: Arcana, Blade, Bone, Codex, Grace, Midnight, Sage, Splendor, and Valor. Every class is tied to two domains, which determine the ability cards available as you level up. Domain cards provide spells, techniques, and passive features.
