Obsidian is a powerful markdown vault for connecting ideas. MythScribe AI is a purpose-built DM toolkit that generates characters, encounters, and worlds — not just stores notes about them.

Running D&D in Obsidian means installing and configuring a stack of community plugins: Fantasy Statblocks, Initiative Tracker, Dice Roller, Leaflet for maps, Dataview for queries, Templater for NPC templates. MythScribe AI has all of this built in — character creation, encounter building, stat blocks, dice rolling, and worldbuilding. No plugin hunting.
Obsidian is excellent at linking notes together. But every note is still written by you. MythScribe AI generates NPCs with full stat blocks, personality, motivation, secrets, and inventory. It creates CR-balanced encounters. It writes backstories that tie into your world. You edit and refine — you don't start from scratch.
In Obsidian, an NPC is a markdown file with frontmatter you define yourself. In MythScribe AI, an NPC is a structured entity with typed fields — ability scores as editable numbers, skills with modifiers, inventory as a tag list, faction links as dropdown selects. The AI understands the structure. When you generate a quest, it can reference real NPCs and locations from your world by name.
If you want local-first storage, full control over your data as plain files, or you already have a polished Obsidian vault with plugins configured, it's a great tool. Obsidian's graph view is also excellent for visualizing connections. MythScribe AI is best for DMs who want to generate content fast and don't want to maintain a plugin stack.

Structured NPC data — not markdown frontmatter

Built-in SRD — no importing markdown files
Absolutely. Many DMs use MythScribe AI for AI-powered generation and session prep, then copy key details into their Obsidian vault for long-term reference and graph visualization.
MythScribe AI is cloud-based, so it requires an internet connection. This is a trade-off for AI-powered generation. If offline access is critical, Obsidian is the better choice.
Obsidian has excellent community plugins like Fantasy Statblocks, Initiative Tracker, and Leaflet. These require configuration and maintenance. MythScribe AI bundles equivalent functionality out of the box — no plugin updates, no breaking changes, no YAML debugging.
7-day free trial. No plugins to install.
